Last janissary

The son of the Turkish ambassador Mustafa, Gulkhan, is fascinated by a Cossack girl from the border detachment. He orders the faithful servant, janissary Altan, to steal Marysya. Altan and Marysya fall in love with each other and decide to flee and hide from everyone – from the Turks, and from the Cossacks.

Gulkhan’s assistants overtake the fugitives: Altan is thrown off the cliff, and Marysya is taken prisoner. The Cossacks are also looking for Marysya, Ermolai, who is in love with her, is especially persistent.

Gulkhan, chasing Marysya, is ready to get rid of pregnant wife Zuleika. He kills Stargazer for attempting to save her, but does not find Zuleika. Altan also survives.

The Cossacks, having collected the necessary amount, redeem Marysya from captivity. She is convinced that Altan was involved in her abduction, and asks Yermolai to kill him. Misunderstandings are soon resolved, but it turns out that Altan considers himself the last remaining Janissary on earth – he intends to observe celibacy.

Mustafa is trying to arrange the wedding of Gulkhan with Aigul, the daughter of his long-time friend Bashkurt. At that Gulkhan is busy with hunting for Marysya and searching for Zuleika. He is told that she was killed, but this is not so. Timofei Soroka suddenly helps her – they get to Turkey together.

Turkish Sultan Selim IV, Mustafa’s cousin, is concerned about finding a heir. His only son Iskender is considered handicapped, and the nephew of the Sultan Gulkhan is the heir to the throne.

Meanwhile, Mustafa begins the search for his long-time crush, a Russian girl. Altan, who does not know that he is the illegitimate son of Mustafa, finds a new owner, the merchant Kuleshov. He plans to trade with Turkey and takes Altan along on a trip as a guard and Marysya, who will pretend his wife. Altan taught Marysya the Janissary art, and now she wants to have a duel with him – if Altan loses, he will be free from the oath of the Janissary. Marysya wins by cunning. Suppressed by this, the Janissary leaves Kuleshov, settles alone on the wild seashore and raids smugglers.

Young Turkish aristocrat Umar Pasha learns about the illegitimate son of Mustafa. The people of Umar find Altan and bring him to the palace. Altan is shocked by the news and is torn between a sense of duty to his homeland and to his father. However Mustafa adores thoughtless Gulkhan.

Bashkurt, who has become the enemy of Mustafa, wants to marry Aigul and Altan. At that Aigul is still in love with Gulkhan, she intends to help him conquer the throne and intrigues against Altan.

Pregnant Zuleika appears before the Sultan, accusing Gulkhan of trying to kill her. The appearance of Zuleika ruins the game of Umar, of Aigul, and of the Sultan’s siter Deniz-effendi, who secretly dreams of taking the throne. They bribe the court doctors, who give a conclusion: the son of Zuleika is not from Gulkhan, she is a harlot and deserves to die. Altan rescues Zuleika from prison and sends her to Kuleshov’s house, where Marysya still lives. She learns from Zuleika that Altan is at court, they want to make him a sultan and marry Aigul. In a man’s dress, Marysya goes to Mustafa’s house, and becomes as a servant to Gulkhan in the image of “Gregory”. Together they appear in the courtyard, where Marysya-Gregory becomes the tutor of Iskender. She understands that the boy is kind and smart and will become a wonderful ruler.

Altan immediately recognized Marysya, but Umar also understands that Gregory is a woman and had an affair with Altan. For her sake, Altan renounces the inheritance, advises the Sultan to make Iskender the heir, and leaves the palace. He waits for Marysya at the appointed place, but the people of Umar seized her and threw her into prison. Gulkhan triumphs and … demands to find Marysya.

The intrigues surrounding the heir to the Turkish throne – Zuleika gave birth to a child of Gulkhan – will continue, as well as the dramatic story of Altan, who is torn between duty and love. Yermolai, who arrived in Turkey as a guard of the Russian mission, will join the battle for the heart of Marysya. The outcome of this battle of loving hearts cannot be predicted in advance…
